SNA Picnic 2014-09

The annual fall picnic was held at Lake Padden Park on Sunday, September 14. The weather was gorgeous, and we had a good turnout in spite of competing with a Seahawks game on TV and Bite of Bellingham in the downtown area. We had about 34 households represented, with a total attendance, including kids, of about 65, socializing and munching on burgers, hot dogs, and a nice assortment of potluck dishes brought by the attendees. Joe Carpenter supplied his grill, and was our principal cook. Thanks to Joe, also to Kevin Probasco who brought in burgers, dogs, and soda, and Don Hale who brought in the supplies (cups, plates, utensils, napkins, etc.). We had a good number of neighbors either join or extend their memberships in the Association. Overall, the day was successful.

SNA Minutes 2014-08

   Samish Neighborhood Association Meeting
August 14, 2014, Community Baptist Church

Meeting called to order by President Hale.

Board members present: Joe Carpenter, Steve Abell, Garey Vodopich, Don Hale, Brian Benjamin, Nikki Long, Kevin Probasco

Board members absent: Tom Roehl, Dick Conoboy, Junga Subedar, Suneeta Eisenberg

Guests: Laird McHattie, Nate Marino, Barbara & Craig Bessire, Paul Grayston, Tom Barrett

Public Comments:

Tom Barrett, a Trustee of the Bellingham Public Library, gave us a presentation on all the services available at the library. In particular, Tom pointed out that there are 20,000 titles available for download as e-books. These are set to expire automatically after download so there is no book return involved. He also pointed out that our library is part of the Whatcom County Library System and books from any of the libraries in the system can be put on hold and picked up at any of the libraries. The library also has monthly programs that are open to the general public. Steve will put a link to the library website on the Links page of the Samish website.

President’s Announcements: none

Old business:

Meeting minutes from June were approved.

Treasurer’s report: Fred Meyer will not donate food for our picnic because our association is not a 501c(3) non-profit. (The value of their donation is therefore not tax deductible.) The balance in our checking account as of this meeting date is $2,279.93. We have a large expense (around $950) coming up this month for printing and mailing our fall Newsletter.

Greg McCracken has the newsletter almost all put together. We discussed the possibility of adding advertising to future newsletters to help pay the ever-increasing costs. Joe mentioned that this idea had come up before but was never pursued. Kevin said he would look into this idea for us.

Joe will bring his grill for cooking at the picnic. We discussed what needed to be purchased including burgers, dogs, chicken and decided to skip the chicken this year. We will not rent extra tables and chairs this year, but will ask people to bring their own chairs for sitting outside the picnic shelter. There should be enough sitting and table space on the tables that are in the shelter. Kevin will get the burgers and dogs. Joe will get soda from Haggen. Don will check with his wife to see if she can organize the other items (buns, condiments, etc.) Brian has some of these things left from last year and will drop them off at Don’s house. We will need volunteers to do the cooking, and we agreed that it might be arranged in 1-hour shifts.

We will do another phone bank to get more members out for the picnic and remind those people who need to pay half-year dues to extend their memberships to April 1, 2015. This should get us on an annual dues payment schedule to make it much easier to keep track of which memberships are active and which have expired. Joe will host the phone bank, and board members interested in participating will meet at his house at about 6 PM on September 4th. Steve will provide phone lists to use in making the calls.

We lost our quorum at the meeting when Brian and Joe had to leave before the meeting concluded, so no more votes could be taken.

New business:

A neighborhood meeting regarding the rezone of Area 9 will be held by the applicant on August 25, 6 PM, at the Elk’s Lodge. We hope some more specific information will be presented regarding plans for development of the site but this is unlikely.

Garey brought up the subject of a lawsuit filed by residents of other south neighborhoods in protest of a new tax. The new tax would be collected to pay back the loan taken out by the city to purchase the 100-Acre Wood property. If the lawsuit wins, then a general tax on the entire city, including Samish, may be levied. If it fails, then the original plan to tax only those residents that live close to the 100-Acre Wood Park would pay the tax. This would not include Samish. If anyone wants more information, the case number in Whatcom Superior Court is 142016944.

Meeting adjourned.

Steve Abell
